A New Year, a New Perspective
As 2025 begins, I’ve been reflecting on the unpredictable journey of aging—a path that’s less about smooth sailing and more about navigating challenges. After four years living in remission from polycythemia vera (PV), I’ve come to understand that maintaining good health requires resilience to overcome challenges and a positive perspective on life.
Back when MPN experts would caution, “Over 60 is high risk for MPN patients,” I used to think, Not me! Turns out, they were right—just not in the way I expected. High risk wasn’t about PV complications; it was about encountering the unique health challenges that come with aging.
A Year of Medical Milestones
January 2024 brought shoulder surgery—a significant medical event that was just the beginning. Now, I’m preparing for back surgery on the last day of January 2025, transforming my health journey into a test of endurance. During the recovery periods between surgeries, I stayed committed to being active by working out at the gym to maintain my strength and by walking regularly. However, due to chronic back pain, I recently decided to ditch the gym and prioritize resting my aching body.
These challenges aren’t simple. Each medical hurdle is a reminder of life’s unpredictability. My PV remission has been a blessing that I am very grateful for! Life has taught me that resilience isn’t about avoiding obstacles but about moving through them with determination.
Looking Forward with Hope
As I prepare for back surgery, I approach it with a blend of hope, believing in positive outcomes while ensuring I make informed decisions regarding my health. This procedure represents a significant step towards resuming the active lifestyle that I hold dear. It’s a reminder that healing is a process, and progress comes at its own pace.
Health journeys are complex and deeply personal. To anyone navigating similar challenges: be patient with yourself, seek support when needed, and remember that each step forward matters, no matter how small.
Here’s to 2025—a year where I look forward to healing from challenges, experiencing personal growth, and maintaining the strength needed to overcome obstacles.
