Part of my inspiration for becoming an advocate and sharing information on PV Reporter is to encourage others living with PV to educate themselves and maintain a positive mindset, despite their diagnosis. I know how it feels to hear the words, “you have cancer,” and how that fear can impact one’s outlook on life. Throughout the years, I’ve engaged with many patients and families in the MPN community and am always amazed by the incredible resilience they display while navigating this challenging, chronic cancer.
Gary – a devoted husband and father, dedicated assistant principal and avid hiker – is an incredible example of someone who took his diagnosis as an opportunity to advocate for optimal care and put fear aside, even when it wasn’t easy.
Below, Gary discusses his diagnosis and journey to finding the best treatment for him. We’re sharing Gary’s story to encourage others to seek out support and resources to improve your PV care.
A message from Gary
Being diagnosed with PV was devastating and it took time for me to accept my diagnosis. By conducting my own research and seeking out an MPN specialist who partnered with me to address my disease, I’ve been able to move forward with a positive outlook. My goal is to live with PV and live fully.
I don’t let my cancer define me and am continuing to challenge myself by embarking on new hikes and engaging with the MPN community. I encourage others living with PV to push through their fears, be their own advocate and seek out an MPN specialist to partner with to find the right treatment approach.
